Chapter 2

When they arrived in Boulogne it was as it had been in Folkestone – thousands of troops being herded hither and thither, with shouting Sergeants and Military Police shoving and kicking any that were too slow. The troops were all being driven like cattle towards the rail head, and Brown sought out a small group of more senior officers who were standing aloof from the chaos. McGill trailed after him carrying Brown’s suitcases and his own holdall. “ I’m looking for  Major Heart of the Provost Marshal’s office, ”  announced Brown. One of the officers looked at him.  “You’ll be the detective from Scotland Yard” he said, contempt in his voice. “ I am. And this is my sergeant, Detective McGill.” The officer glanced at McGill, dismissing him instantly. “ SERGEANT!” A ram rod straight giant of a man materialised behind Brown. “ Sah!” “ Take these detectives to the Provost Marshall’s office.” McGill thought he made “detectives” sound like something horrible at the bottom of a cesspit. The giant saluted, then whirled round and marched off at an angle. Brown and McGill followed as he carved a way through the milling crowds, and out into the cold night. Outside he turned sharp right and headed for a building which looked like a small railway station. There were red-capped guards on the door, and the sergeant stamped to a halt in front of them. “ Two detectives for Major Heart!” So saying he swung round again with a clatter and scrape of hobnail boots and marched back the way he had come. One of the redcaps was already holding his hand out for Brown’s papers. “You’re the ones from the Yard then?” he said.

Brown nodded. “I’ll tell Major ‘eart you’re ‘ere.” He turned towards the door. The other man never moved, though McGill could see his eyes were looking them up and down. The door opened again and an immaculately turned out Major, complete with waxed moustache and swagger stick, stood on the threshold. He proffered his hand. “I’m Heart, and you’ll be Brown. And this is..?” Brown took the hand and shook it. “This is my sergeant, McGill” “ You better come in. Have you eaten?” “ Not since lunchtime.” “Very good.SERGEANT!” “Yessir”  “ Cut along to the canteen and get a couple of sandwiches, then brew us up one when you get back” “Yessir” “ And don’t dawdle’” “ Yessir” Heart ushered them through an outer office where two extremely large redcaps where sitting either side of a wretch who looked half dead and half drowned as well. McGill looked at him. Heart saw the glance, and smiled crookedly. “ I wouldn’t worry about him, sergeant. He tried to desert and my lads had to restrain him.” McGill thought a mouse could have done it, but clearly the redcaps had had other ideas. “ What’ll happen to him?” asked Brown. Heart smiled again. “ Sadly flogging isn’t allowed anymore and we can’t charge him with cowardice in the face of the enemy as it happened here in Boulogne. He’ll get 90 days number one field punishment. And I daresay he’ll either attempt to escape again or attack one of my men, so he’ll get another beating – or two” McGill grimaced. “ Wellington had it right – they are the scum of the earth, “ said Heart as he sat down behind his desk. “ Shut the door sergeant.” McGill obeyed and sat on the chair farthest from the desk. “ Well now, you’ve read our reports?” “ We have, “ said Brown.” Looks as if you’ve done a very thorough job “ Heart smiled again “ so I’ll just have my sergeant

speak to the people mentioned in the report, and that should wrap it up”. Heart’s smile broadened. He reached for some headed paper and began to write. “This is for my opposite number in Etaples, Major Wylie. You have to go through there to be cleared for the front. Strictly speaking Amiens is about 25 miles from where the real fighting is but it’s still in the reserve area. Once you’ve seen Wylie he’ll organise the transport to Amiens and hand you over to Colonel Berry and his aide, Major Watkins in Amiens. Anything else you need, they can arrange. I understand the General OC in the sector wants to see you. Wylie will tell you when you are wanted.” “ Thank you, “ said Brown. “ I’ll be going to Amiens, but I’ve arranged to see some friends round about. But McGill, here, will be doing whatever is needed.” Heart looked at McGill and raised his eyebrows. Brown caught the glance. “ He’s perfectly sound, and he has my instructions. As I said, we shan’t be taking too long, we’ll just confirm what is already known.” Heart seemed mollified, and addressed McGill. “ You know there are no leads of any description? God knows why HQ  are going on about this – it’s perfectly clear no one is ever going to be caught. We don’t even know who he was or what he was doing there. One body more or less isn’t going to make a blind bit of difference.” McGill nodded. With that attitude, there was little to say. There was a knock on the door, and a soldier appeared with a tray of doorstep sandwiches and three steaming mugs of tea. Heart passed them round, and helped himself to one of the sandwiches. “ In case you’re worried, this tea is perfectly ordinary. It doesn’t have any of the bromide in it we give to the troops.” McGill had no idea what Heart was talking about, but Brown just nodded, and grunted as he bit into the corned beef. Heart looked at his watch. “ You’ve about 20 minutes until the next train. It shouldn’t take more than an hour or so to get to Etaples. But it’ll depend on the movements at that end how much longer it’ll take to get into the unloading area. Wylie has a couple of billets for

you and he’ll pass you on as soon as there’s space. Here are your movement passes.” Brown reached across and took them. “ And don’t forget the number one rule of being out here. Keep your head down and sleep whenever you can – you never know when the next chance will be.” So saying he stood up and reached his hand across to Brown again.     “ SERGEANT!”  “ Sir!” “ Take these two to the next train and see they are settled, then report back here.” “Yessir” Brown shook Heart’s hand and turned to follow the sergeant. McGill picked up the bags and followed. He noticed Heart never even looked at him. It’s as well seeing there are sergeants, thought McGill. Nothing would ever get done otherwise. By the time the sergeant had pushed and shoved the two detectives onto a train, McGill’s senses were swamped with noise and the smell of rank bodies. He felt lots of eyes on them in their civvy clothes as everyone else was in uniform. The train ground slowly along the rails with dozens of trains going in the opposite direction, and at a bend, McGill looked out of the window to see trains following and in front of them. They stopped a couple of times for no apparent reason, then juddered into motion again. Nearly two hours later they were passing the sea on their right, and a wan ray of moonlight pierced the gloom. McGill was suddenly aware of a murmuring and rumbling about him, which grew louder. With a final, exhausted whistle the train pulled into a siding, and the shouting started. Carriage doors were flung open and obscenities shouted into compartments. Grumbling slack-eyed men gathered up their kit and part fell, part stumbled out into the chill, dank night. McGill and Brown had been in an officer’s carriage, and the door was opened by a redcap Major, who climbed into the compartment.  “ Inspector Brown?” Brown nodded. “I’m Brown” “ Major Wylie. Welcome to Etaples!” Brown and Wylie shook hands. “ Where’s your luggage?” Brown pointed to it on the string luggage racks.

“ Corporal Aitket! Take charge of those suitcases!”  A smartly dressed corporal climbed into the compartment. None of the other officers who had shared the journey had moved a muscle. McGill darted glances at them. They were all afraid, not just of the redcaps but of the war. They sat where they were hoping a few extra minutes of safety might be had. Wylie and Brown dropped out of the carriage, followed by the corporal and McGill. Wylie turned to him. “ And who are you?” Bloody hell thought McGill, those bastards in Boulogne never even mentioned me. And Brown didn’t bother to either. “ I’m…” “ He’s my sergeant,” Brown cut in. Wylie eyed him. “ Ah. I see” He turned on his heels and marched off, swagger stick perfectly positioned under his oxter. The others followed. As in Folkestone and Boulogne, the noise was overpowering with shouts, the noise of trains and their whistles, and the noise of marching men. McGill, who had been stunned by the seething mass of men before, was even more overwhelmed. The brutality and endless swearing made him ask the corporal as they walked along –“ Is it always like this?” “ Twenty four hours a day mate. We takes the new boys in and trains them up. Then we sends them to the front, where they get shot. If they’re the lucky ones, they come back ‘ere to get patched up” McGill heard the bitterness in Aitket’s voice. “ It can’t be as bad as that, is it?” Aitket stopped abruptly and looked McGill full in the face. “ You don’t know the ‘alf of it. We’ve only just finished sortin’ a bloody mutiny ‘ere. ‘ad to shoot some poor sod just a couple of weeks ago. And there’s those as prefer going back to the front before they’re properly fit, rather than stay ‘ere” So saying he marched on, leaving McGill to catch up. They walked for about ten minutes, gradually leaving most of the noise behind, and finally came to barbed wire and sentries. Wylie simply touched his swagger stick to his cap when challenged and the sentries snapped to attention. Once inside the compound, McGill

could make out a guardroom, and leading away behind it a series of what looked like beach huts. More sentries saluted as Wylie walked up the steps. Inside some redcaps were having cups of tea, but leapt to attention as the small group entered. “ Stand easy”, said Wylie as he crossed to a shut door, knocked, then entered without waiting for an answer. Inside, a tall, thin man was sitting with his feet on a desk, a curl of smoke drifting lazily up from the cigarette he held in his right hand. He was staring at the ceiling. “ These are the Scotland Yard detectives, sir” said Wylie, as he threw a dilatory salute. Makes us sound like pig shit thought McGill. The man behind the desk never moved, and the party stood awkwardly. Slowly the man’s right arm bent, and the cigarette came to his lips. He languidly sucked for a moment then moved his arm slowly back down again. He never took his eyes from the ceiling. “ You deal with it Wylie” “ Yes sir, of course sir” So saying Wylie indicated the others should retreat out into the main area. He shut the door, pointed towards another, and led the way into the room behind. He took off his cap and sat behind the desk. “ Corporal, have you organised sleeping quarters for our guests?” “Yessir.” “ Good. Show them where and what the drill is. We’ll meet in the morning say oh nine hundred -9o’clock?” This last was addressed to Brown, who nodded. Aitket ushered Brown and McGill out of the guard room again and towards the chalets. He stopped at the first one, opened the door, and put the cases inside. “ An orderly will bring you some ‘ot water at oh six thirty hours, breakfast is in the mess the other side of the guard room, and the latrines is out the back door.” So saying he saluted and backed out, indicating Brown should enter. With an inclination of his head, he made McGill follow him further down the line of huts. He repeated the process, and made to leave. McGill put a hand on his arm. “ Stay a minute, chum. Who was the bloke in that room?” Aitket glanced at McGill.

“ That’s our CO, Colonel Shimpling. Got ‘iself bombed behind the lines at the Somme – never been the same since. ‘e were only a Major then, so they promoted ‘im and gave ‘im Wylie to keep things running smooth, like. Wylie keeps putting in for a transfer, ‘cos he knows ‘e’ll never get any further up the ladder where ‘e is. They ain’t ‘avin’ it though. Wylie’s stuck ‘ere and no mistake. Shimpling ent goin’ nowhere, neither. Makes ‘em both bloody minded” McGill dropped his hand and Aitket looked at him angrily. Then he lowered his eyes and turned away once more. “ Yea well, likely see yer tomorrow. Don’t forget, ‘ot water oh six thirty.” So saying he shut the door behind him, leaving McGill to ponder on how good men could never rise beyond their station. McGill looked around the dingy room. There was a camp bed, a dressing table with a wash bowl on it, a chair and a bedside table. A skimpy towel hung on the back of the chair. There was no fire or heater. A couple of blankets lay folded on the end of the bed and something he supposed was a pillow. Sighing, McGill decided to stay in his clothes. He lay down on the bed, took off his boots and pulled the blankets over himself. He started to say a quick prayer but fell asleep before he could finish. He awoke with a start at a loud rapping on the door and a bellow – “Hot water, Sir!” – made him realise he’d slept without a break all night through. It was the first decent night’s sleep he’d had in a month. He staggered over to the door and yanked it open. A cold blast of air reminded him he had no shoes on. There stood Aitket holding a steaming urn with a towel and a bar of soap. Drowsily, McGill took the items and Aitket stamped off. As he shaved and changed his shirt, McGill reflected on the sudden night’s sleep. It couldn’t be the change of air, he decided. It must be that he was more settled within himself. Instead of mounds of paperwork and being talked-down to by toffee-nosed inspectors who were always swanning off, he was effectively in charge of this investigation. Brown wasn’t going to be around, so McGill felt he was going to be able to conduct it the way he wanted to. For the first time in months he was looking forward to his day. He smiled at himself in the mirror, and thought things could be worse

McGill walked through the cold air back the way he had come in the early hours of the morning. Lights were blazing in the guard room and there were two new smartly turned out redcaps on the door. Their eyes followed him as he sauntered past, slightly exaggerating the casual stroll, something he was able and allowed to do but they were not. He grinned to himself, and thought for the second time that perhaps not being in the army wasn’t so bad after all.  Beyond the guardroom he found the mess, and joined the end of the queue, picking up an enamel plate as he shuffled nearer the food. There was no choice – it was a hunk of bread, fried eggs and bacon, with a steaming mug of tea. He looked round for a place to sit and saw Brown waving to him. He was at a table with a dozen soldiers, all redcaps, and was already smoking. He looked as if he had not slept. McGill sat down opposite him. “ Did you sleep?” asked Brown. “ Yes, sir, very well thank you.” “ Hmmpf! Never had a worse night – dreadful camp bed and freezing cold!” He paused. “ I’m not sure what we’re supposed to do until 9o’clock, so I’m going to take a turn around the camp.” So saying he rose and made for the door. McGill preferred his own company anyway, so that was no hardship. He’d take a turn himself after his breakfast. As he started tucking in, one of the sergeants further down the table spoke to him. “ You’re one of them Scotland Yard characters.” It was a flat statement, not a question. “ Yes I am” “ Think you’ll find out more than us, do you?” McGill paused the fork on it’s way to his mouth, then finished the action and started chewing. He said nothing for a moment or two. There was no point making enemies. “ I shouldn’t think so, no. From what I’ve seen so far it looks like somebody did a pretty thorough job”. There was a palpable lessening of tension round the table. McGill tore a bit of bread from his chunk, and dipped it into one of his eggs. Thorough job my arse, he thought.

“ It certainly seems all very mysterious,” he added. The sergeant glanced across at one of the other redcaps, then back at McGill. “ We think it was some Frenchie who was trying to rob him when he was drunk. Maybe he came to and the Frenchie offed him.” McGill nodded.”Yes that could be it. Mind you, stealing a uniform isn’t exactly  worth being hanged for.” “Maybe he had money in it.”  McGill shook his head. “If that was the motive, he’d have simply taken the money. Why take the uniform ? Anyway, what makes everyone think he HAD a uniform?” The sergeant blinked. “ Stands to reason. Who else could it be but a soldier?” “ Well, it might even be a Frenchman,” said McGill innocently, forking a piece of bacon, and carefully using his knife to put a few dabs of egg yolk onto it.”… or a journalist..” The sergeant leant back in his chair.” Nah, can’t see it meself.” McGill shrugged.” Doesn’t hurt to keep an open mind though. At least until there are some positive facts to go on.” “ Ah, now that’s a point. There are no facts other than there being a strangled naked man in an empty house.” “ My point exactly,” said McGill as he finished his plate and took a swig of tea. “ We’ll have to see if any turn up. But you’d have to ask why no clothes. It can only be to hamper identification.” So saying, he downed the last of his tea, pushed back from the table, picked up his now empty plate, and headed for the serving area. He put his plate onto a pile of other dirty dishes, and looked back at the table. The sergeant was still looking at him. If I didn’t know better, McGill thought, I’d say he was a suspect. He made his way out of the mess and started walking back towards the entrance to the redcap’s compound. He spoke with one of the guards and said he was going for a short walk. The guard looked at him suspiciously, as if doing such a thing was tantamount to blasphemy, but nodded and waived him through. The one thing everybody seems to know, thought McGill, is who we are and what we are here for. No one had asked him for any form of

identification at any point, yet simply allowed him to wander about. The antipathy was like a solid wall. He turned left out of the compound. To his right he could see wooden shacks with red crosses on them. To his left the train sidings were already heaving with jostling, pushing troops. On the other side of the tracks were more substantial buildings which he decided must be the HQ block, judging by the cars, guards and the odd red tab. He came to a cross roads. He could see the river and the bridge which led across to Le Touquet. That was out of bounds to most, apart from officers. To the left, the town of Etaples stretched along the river, exhausted by the continual beating it took from the tens of thousands of troops that used it to try to forget. McGill shuddered slightly. He was definitely going off the idea of being a fighting man. To his right he spied a number of white and blue figures flitting along. Nurses! He turned towards them. McGill had been sweet on a nurse once. Abigail. After his parents died and he settled in to his family house as master, he had wanted to bring her to be mistress. But McGill’s life always seemed to interfere with their plans and eventually Abigail told him she was engaged to another. He hadn’t tried hard enough, but he had tried with another girl. Abigail stuck in his mind though and he found himself comparing his new girl to her all the time. Now he felt that he was too set in his ways to ever find domestic happiness. As he walked towards them, their cheery chatter drifted across the open space. McGill stopped and listened. He hadn’t heard anything as carefree in years. In London, people walked around with their heads down and grave expressions on their faces. The whores he used to come across on his beat in the East End were cheerful enough, but with an underlying hard, exhausted sadness to them. Not cheery as these girls were. McGill couldn’t think why they seemed so happy. He started walking slowly towards them again. As he got closer, one or two glanced towards him, their eyes taking in his size and smooth complexion. As he drew level with the door of the hut, an older more substantial woman emerged. “ Yes? And what do YOU want?” McGill raised his hat. “ Good morning, Matron. I’m only stretching my legs after travelling yesterday.”

“ Hmpf! Well keep away from my nurses. They’ve enough on their plates without being bothered by the likes of you!” As she turned to go back inside, McGill ventured “ They seem so carefree”. The Matron whirled back to him, hands on hips, face blazing. “ And what exactly makes you think that? Just because they are seemingly happy doesn’t mean they are!” “ No, I suppose not – sorry Matron. It’s just – you know – with all the wounded and so on, how do they manage to be cheery?” The Matron glared at him.  “ They have to be or they would cry. These girls have seen things no man ever should. Just you remember that, Mr. Smarmy pants, and leave them alone!” So saying she spun on her heels and went inside. McGill doffed his hat again to her back, and with a “ And a good day to you, too, Matron”, he continued his walk. The sky looked as if it had been punched leaving heavy bruises. McGill had always thought the weather in France would be better than in London, but looking at the clouds he felt sure there was little to choose between the two places. Well, between London and Northern France anyway. He’d heard the south of France where the toffs went in the winter was like a Shangri-La. Looking up, he sighed. This was more like living in Wales than Shangri- La. He and Brown had been sent there recently on a case. Miserable place and miserable people. No one would even talk to them, until McGill befriended the local trollop, another outsider. It was only through what she knew of the community that they’d been able to make an arrest. The skies had been grey and dark the whole time they were there. The sun hadn’t broken through until they had made it back past Bristol. McGill turned away from the river and nurses quarters, in towards where the hospitals lay. There were ambulances coming and going, ferrying wounded from the railway sidings. Bandaged soldiers limped about on crutches as cheery nurses chivvied them along. The conversations were all of “mates” who were no longer there, who’d copped it somewhere to the North East, blown up by a shell, chopped in two by a hail of machine gun fire, or hung up on the wire. There’s no heroism here, thought McGill, there’s only death or survival.

Mystical, Celtic and New Age, How Poetry is an Art Form. A Review of "Utter" by David Redfield.

Saturday, May 9, 2020

Think of Art, and what is the first thing that conjures with inside of your mind? A painting perhaps? Well the truth is that Art is a broad spectrum of things, from Music, Paintings, Photography and even more. If you were to conjure up a list of art forms it would be pretty endless. But art is also a communication and expression method.

I recently was sent a book, on Poetry, from an author called David Redfield, and for anyone familiar with The Isles of Scilly, he is a very well known figure, with his various poetry projects, that are inspired by these glorious islands.

His poetry collection within his book, "Utter" captivates the magic of these islands, using a unique method of writing, and writing is an art form. Look at examples of copywriting, from big brands and you will soon see that it is possible to use words and fonts as a method of artwork. Poetry is no different and as an art form, with festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival, Poetry plays a big part. Even to Literature festivals such as the Hay Festival. A much loved festival of books, readings and poetry, a truly unique experience within it's own rights.

Utter, is another collection of art, all be it within written form, and it is sheer magic is a prelude, not in music but in words to The Isles of Scilly. Utter Is a unique mixture of poetry that is Mystical, Celtic and New Age. It really is poetry that has been written in a calming and soothing way, it relaxes the mind and even via the reading of Utter, you are transferred to the islands. Even reading the book on the islands you end up on a beach, with the sound of the waves lapping against the shore of these magical islands.

The poetry within Utter, takes you on a journey around these mystical and stunning granite islands, and places the reader on an inter-island adventure in verse and within written words, sheer magic. The poetry reflects and encapsulates these islands perfectly, with the wide open heath lands and rugged beauty of each island. Including the mystical and magical island of St Agnes, with the fantastic poem, entitled "Spell at St. Warna's", which is a homage to the Celtic backbones of these five stunning islands.

Each poem, reflects the times gone by alongside with the ever changing and infamous Scillonian Landscapes, from past to future with the impacts of tourism to the wrecks that surround the islands, and the winter storms.

It really is a book for all seasons, and for each one of the islands. yet it is amazing how poetry, is an art form that we should be discovering more of.

Utter, though is a book of two halves. The first half, being dedicated to The Isles of Scilly, the place which has inspired David Redfield, On his various visits to the islands, a place which has captured his heart. The second half of his book, is observation based upon life and nature which really makes the poetry book, easy to read, and provides the reader with a way for pondering on the natural elements of life on the planet, such as life and the growth of mother earth.

One thing I have discovered whilst reading this book, is that it really is powerful, the way the poems are written is beautifully curated, and sing the song that a sky lark makes.

Pure magic, with Mystical, Celtic and New age feelings, of travel and self discovery, a complex poetry book, which is just truly magical, and I for one can recommend that for anyone on The Isles of Scilly, least not tourists who love the islands, that want to be transported to the islands. And yes it is also a fantastic poetry book, for Lockdown, an escape from reality and a journey of nature and the raw coastal atmosphere that the islands have.

And I urge anyone both on or off The Isles of Scilly, to go ahead and purchase this book, you really shall not be disappointed.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Utter-David-Redfield/dp/1526202727/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&qid=1589051230&refinements=p_27%3ADavid+Redfield&s=books&sr=1-3

Finally, David Redfield has been kind enough, to give an interview, about his Poetry and his love of the islands, including his latest project, The Lockdown Renga Project, for The Isles of Scilly, this is an exclusive interview, that is available to listen to, on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts. His interview, will also be on YouTube.

But if there is one thing, Poetry is one of those art forms, that connects us all together, which is something that we all need, to bind us together, through these strange times. And as an art form, poetry really needs to be discovered more, it is quite simply beauty within words.

And a quick reminder, David is still looking for people to compete in his Lockdown Renga Project, more details can be found below.

Passive Income, How you can earn whilst Self Isolating.

Thursday, May 7, 2020

I came across a tweet earlier, which was not exactly that nice to read, and was in regards to the governments "furlough scheme" a scheme designed to help people, which has been found out to be a big lie, and the government are planning to reduce and perhaps even scrap the furlough scheme, in June, which really is not of a great help to a lot of people who can not access and have not been able to access the scheme. It really is uncomfortable and the tweet I came across literally said the following.

"I can’t survive on thin air! Any suggestions how to live with no income can’t claim benefits for another 5 weeks ... so no money for me since my March pay day... monthly salaried so missed RTI/PAYE submission date... SCANDALOUS!"

And yes it is scandalous in so many ways, it also goes to show that the government is letting you and us down as citizens. And with this Lockdown, does come the fall out, personally I am sceptical of the whole thing and element of Lockdown, you will more than likely have your own thoughts, and that is understandable.

However what can not be avoided, is the very fact that without economics, damage will be caused. It really is a fine line, dealing with health and wealth. Economy and Economics have been around and used for centuries, along with healthcare systems. At the moment though each country no matter how rightfully or wrongly have handled the pandemic have to find the perfect balance. Sweden have found that balance. New Zealand have also found that Balance and New Zealand did take the option of Lockdown but have eased restrictions and are in talks to open a trans Tasman bubble. Sweden like Taiwan avoided Lockdown, and have also found the balance of wealth and health.

Both New Zealand and Sweden have socialist governments who protect the rights of their populations, but also care about workforce.

Throughout the EU jobs are being protected to some degree and a Universal Basic Income, package has been rolled out to each nation within the EU, something which has become a lifeline. Here in the UK, though things have been different, no Universal Basic Income, a Furlough Scheme, that has been about as reliable as a lead balloon, and instead.... Universal Credit, which is also about as much use as.... You guessed it, a balloon made out of lead.

And yet these systems do not offer any kind of sustainable income of any kind. But this is where things can and could change.

Another method of earning money, is to play a game of Chess. A game of Strategy that can actually pay off, simple strategical thinking and you can win a game of chess in only a few moves. Apply that logic to passive income, and you can actually earn quite a lot of money. However though passive income is largely strategical. A gamble, not so much so, but work with strategy and you can win. Passive Income itself can be quite a good way to make money, all be it organically.

So, where to start? And how can I earn a passive income? Two crucial questions.

The Isles of Scilly, are a unique island group, that relies on seasonal workers, again for many the many residents, the need for passive income is also something that could be of help.

A lot of passive income can be generated using an existing computer or laptop. The best thing to do, is to start with a platform such as YouTube.

Other platforms such as podcasting can also be fantastic to gain a passive income with as well. But lets look at the YouTube model, something that is a fantastic starting point for passive income. Whilst to begin with you might not see anything, time is of the essence, but what is time other than linear.

Starting with the YouTube model (A Model that can also be applied to Podcasting):

One thing that you will need is a Gmail address. Gmail is free, and does allow you to start up a YouTube Channel, not only that but Gmail also gives you access to Google Drive, Blogger, Google Docs and more.

But what you should first and foremost do, is to start up a YouTube Channel. Give it a catchy name, and you are away. Add a channel description as well, and that is it, you are pretty much set up. Yet hold on, no content.... With Google Docs, which is the same as Word, within or for Microsoft, come up with a list, a list of things that you would like to do.

What people want, is usually entertaining content, not to be rick rolled, a trend that died down. Entertaining content and this can be anything from comedy to lifestyle. If you are a gamer with a console then you can stream directly to YouTube, in terms of a beginner, though that list is important, self isolation and quarantine is the best time to think positive, to actually build a better you, to look to the future.

Back on track though, people do not want the news, and entertainment is key here, especially now, a lot more entertainment is appearing on YouTube, so why not start a vlog and mix it with lifestyle hacks, discuss the productivity apps you use and educate people. If you are into photography, then mix that in, surprisingly a lot of photographers on YouTube, like to give there potential customers and other like minded people, a behind the scenes tour of what goes on, in order to capture that fantastic image.

Another popular, element, is food and drink, YouTube itself can be a place to teach people various cooking hacks, tips and tricks..... And with staying home, this could be the best time to inspire others on making dishes with three ingredients? Who knows, you could be the next James Martin.....

Podcasting, is also rather simple, for anyone wanting to get into Podcasting and making a Podcast, then Anchor, is your best friend, and free, from here you can upload to various platforms including Spotify... I shall include links, at the end of this blog post/article, on handy tips and tricks to start earning passive income.

However, with YouTube and Podcasting, you need to have enough listeners, with podcasting to make money, again with YouTube you need to have at least 1,000 subscribers, seems a lot but it can be easily done, just make sure that your content for YouTube is anywhere between ten and fifteen minutes long, that is the base level. You also need at least 4,000 public watch hours, before you can even apply for Channel monetization. Monetization, means that your videos will feature adverts, with these adverts come revenue, for every time someone clicks the advert, you earn money.

I would also recommend, with YouTube, signing up to Google Analytics and Adsense, both fantastic to give an insight into channel trends and demands. What is the most popular content, etc, and do keep a watch on YouTube analytics as well.

But, if you are prepared to put the work in, you can earn enough through adverts and revenue to live on, something that can and could be crucial.

Again, with Anchor, you can turn on, Monetization, which means you can earn money, in a passive sense.

But, things can get even better, with this form of passive income, the bigger your channel, more companies will want to advertise, and strike up brand deals, sponsorship deals and promotions, this is when you can earn even more.

But remember, that interesting and fun content is key for this.....

Links about YouTube and Podcasting inspiration:

Teach and Educate others

Curious minds love to learn, platforms such as skill share, and other platforms, allow you to submit online courses, that can be downloaded by other people, want to teach a language, teach people how to use hardware, software.... anything, then creating content for online learning platforms can be truly fantastic, and can get you some passive income, incredibly easily, the only thing stopping you, is your mind, find a subject, and educate others, become the teacher, and the more unique the subject, the more people will want to learn.

Blogging:

Writing is one of the most therapeutic methods of escaping the world, and with platforms such as Blogger, WordPress alongside with Medium, are both fantastic, Blogger is more or less owned by Google, but non the less, it offers the ability to earn money via monetization. Medium however works slightly differently, Medium is more or less, Twitter, but with more words that you can type. WordPress.com is the free version, however for less than £5.00 it is possible to build a blog using WordPress and some Hosting, again plenty of tutorials are out there, and WordPress with hosting and a domain name, is the best option. However, Wix and Squarespace, are also two fantastic platforms for blogging.

And, is it the right thing to do? Starting a Blog, during times of a pandemic? Yes, it is written history, and it can also earn some nice passive income for you.

Final thoughts:

Whilst we are still in Lockdown, rightly or wrongly.... It is perhaps the best time, to start looking at passive income, work with the strategical elements, work with trends and observe, what other material is out there, research blogs, content and teaching platforms, and it is something that can help you, earn some money, something which is important both now and within the future. And I have a feeling, that more people will be looking at passive income methods, going forward within the next number of months.

And whilst there are arguments for and against the Lockdown. Economies are linked with lives, without economy comes loss of life.... a harsh but true fact.

The Media and Blowing things out of proportion.

Wednesday, April 29, 2020

With the UK in it's fifth week of Lockdown, I have been largely ignoring the news as much as I can do, something that I urge a lot of people to do. People got fed up of Brexit, last year and Sky News, launched a news channel that was completely free of Brexit.

Now we are faced with a pandemic and the media are full of fear-mongering.... Surely the media could find other news and positive stories happening around the globe, surely news channels and media outlets could launch stand alone news channels and news outlets that do not cover the pandemic, it really would not be hard to do, you managed to do it with Brexit, when we got a little bored of Brexit, now people are bored of the pandemic. We want positive news.

I earlier took a little look at the news, yes a little look and it really was repulsive and full of scare-mongering.

So far both journalists and politicians have been fantastic at installing fear into us all, which is sad, especially within a day and an age where we are perhaps even more reliant on technology than ever before. Was fake news a thing during the Spanish Flu pandemic? Simple answer is no. Now it is. Finland educates it's younger generation and it's population in general to spot fake news. Finland has even taken the approach to enlist it's social media influencers to help stop the spread of fake news.

America on the other hand is a hot bed for fake news, having said that the UK is not that much of a hot bed for fake news, but even so, fake news within the UK is still in existent.

And no more so than today, where a headline going around the country, is of and i quote "A New Disease within children that displays itself like COVID"

How low can the media get? They are already distrusted enough which is a natural reaction during a global emergency, but this new disease is not new.

Rare; yes..... New..... No. It is actually Kawasaki Disease, Earlier on today, Matt Hancock was seen as a health expert... I shall leave that open to discussion, talking about this new disease, sorry Kawasaki Disease, as being something new. It quite simply as I have stated, not new, just rare.

Now if that is not fear mongering then I do not know what is. Kawasaki Disease is one of those things that actually happens and sadly occurs when the immune system is lowered. The immune system generally needs to be healthy regardless of.

However with the pandemic and the Lockdown, people's immune systems including those of children will becoming lowered.

And yet, somehow the media like to push fear at the population. The same kind of fear that happened during world war two, the kind of fear that creates a two tier society, that stirs up hatred of people. A clever move? No, to keep people safe? No?

What I also find astonishing is that the media love in general to blow things out of proportion alongside with politicians.

But, Kawasaki Disease, which I repeat is not new, is something that is an effect of having a lowered immune system, and surely that could be something to do with being in Lockdown? An indirect lowered immune system struggling because of a lack of healthy immunity, surely this is something that needs to be addressed? Also where is the evidence to suggest that Lockdown actually does work?

Who knows.

But please, I beg the media in general, such as Peston, Laura Kuenssberg and other journalists, to stop putting a spin on what is in effect nature. The world at the end of the day will never be virus free, instead let nature do what nature does, and stop printing and spreading fear into people.

Is it any wonder that there is so much distrust, and when we see the above, with a new disease that is not new, it is clear proof that you are just scaring people.

Stop it, as it really is not true, again your news articles and reports are simply adding to people's anxiety which again can result in unhealthy mental health, lowered immunity and anxiety.

Instead, try to promote good news and positive news, it really is not difficult is it?

Podcasts, Something Different for Lockdown.

Friday, April 24, 2020

With so many people working from home, finding the balance between concentration on work projects and relaxation, after work or when taking a break from work. That perfect balance could be a walk around the garden, catching up on a Netflix episode or something on Amazon Prime. Perhaps even listening to music or even a spot of gaming. The Sims and City Building games are perfect for relaxation; however there is something else that can be the opposite of music or television and gaming.... That is spoken word.

When I say, spoken word, I am not talking about audio books, although they can be just as fantastic to listen to.

What I am talking about are Podcasts. Something that are really becoming slightly bigger and more accessible for everyone. Apple I suppose decided to make podcasts actually "known" and the iPod made them even more popular. If it was not for apple, then would podcasts have actually become popular. They to begin with did remain popular, but then they dipped in popularity and podcasts became less popular.

However with various new advancements within technology, podcasts have gained a new following and have undergone a major regeneration. It is also easier now, to produce and release a podcast, and even more you can do it on your smartphone with a smartphone app, such as Anchor.

With apps such as Anchor, it means that you can have a potential passive income, with monetisation. Anyway moving on from the passive income element, that is something else I shall cover on here.

But podcasts though are the ideal way to relax with. Music yes is fantastic to listen to, but if you want something calming, podcasts are the ideal way to unwind and relax during these incredibly strange times.

The other thing with podcasts is variety, the sheer amount of variety and issues that are covered within podcasts are as broad as they are wide, and below are a number of various podcasts and topics that are covered within these fantastic audio shows that really can and do open up curious minds both young and old.

  • Politics
  • Science
  • Music
  • Technology
  • Arts
  • Spoken Word, Drama
  • Educational and Children's
The list really does go on. Only yesterday I was listening to a Radio 4 Podcast, which is called Open Country, a fascinating podcast about the countryside, life within semi rural areas from celebrity figures, truly relaxing to listen to.

But how exactly do I go about listening to podcasts? Accessing podcasts are incredibly easy. And below are some methods of how to access podcasts.

  • Google Podcasts - Perhaps the easiest way of accessing podcasts is through the Google Podcasts application, which can be downloaded for both Android and IOS. Plus even better you can listen to podcasts, via your browser, as long as you are signed into your gmail account. Easy and Simple is the application, and the best thing, Google Podcasts is designed to work alongside your smart speakers. Ideal for that end of work relaxation period.
  • BBC Sounds App - Again another free application, the BBC Sounds App, works on Android and IOS plus through any web browser.
  • Spotify - Again this is another fantastic piece of software, yes you can pay £9.99 a month or £4.99 a month if you have a .ac.uk email address and are within education. But Spotify has everything. Music and Podcasts, the software for Apple and Windows is fantastic and easy to navigate, plus take advantage of the Android and IOS applications. Pure bliss.
  • Pocket Casts - More in depth in terms of a podcast app, but at least there is a free version, although it does come with adverts. Want to avoid adverts then you can pay a small subscription.
  • Blinkist - Blinkist is a more hybrid approach. Whilst you could argue that it is a podcast application, it takes the best of both worlds, from Audible (An audio book player), and mixes this with short audio story element with podcasts. Something that could be useful between work, whilst on a break. Best of all each short story fact or fiction is sixteen minutes long. Although it might be worth subscribing. Oh and it works in conjunction with your smart speaker.
Yes there is music, YouTube and other streaming services, but lets not forget the hidden gem of podcasts.... Interesting and thought provoking for escapism during these strange times, and something that we should all be doing, escaping the news, focusing on the positives and listening to podcasts.

A Truly Heartwarming Story of Positives and Human Compassion. How Kia Tobin lifted the nations Hearts.

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Good news and Positive news, is something that is truly heartwarming, and it provides us escapism and raises our spirits. What I am going to tell you, in this article, is a heartwarming true story, that shows the positives of human compassion, regardless of age ranges or gaps, and how one 17 year old carer in Preston, bought a tear to all of our eyes.

We as a society in the UK, are quick to judge, we are quick to judge people by their age, by their sex, by their sexuality, by the way they look, by their religion, by their beliefs. It really is a sad and sordid state of looking at society in general.

Society being the human race, the human race being a species of mammal. Much like Whales and Dolphins, who are also mammals.... Let that sink in for a minute.

17 Year Old, Kia Tobin, a care assistant working at Thistleton Lodge Care Home, in Preston had noticed, that 94 year old naval veteran Ken Benbow, would go to bed, with a picture of his wife Ada, in a photo frame, on a table, next to his bedside. What happened next was incredibly amazing.... Quite possibly one of the most touching things that I have seen in a long time. Human compassion but on another level.

Care assistant Kia Tobin, was filmed, one morning giving a truly special and amazing present to veteran, Ken Benbow. She walked in, to his room and presented him with a cushion, a printed cushion with a photograph of his wife, the same one that is in the photo frame, next to his bedside. As can be expected, tears of happiness, sadness and a time for pondering.

What it shows, is that as a society, we should perhaps not be so quick to judge others. At 17 Years old and perhaps not in a Pandemic, the media would have completely ignored these actions, that Kia Tobin, went to. Perhaps if there was not a Pandemic, society would have judged Kia Tobin, as a "typical teenage girl".

How far removed could those people be, could the media be even? Incredibly far removed is the simple answer.

For what society forgets is that we are all human, regardless of our skin tones, regardless of our looks, religion and beliefs and as the sun goes down, we all bleed the same red blood. A strange but true outlook, that society should look at before being so quick to judge.

And here is the thing, Kia Tobin, is one of many care assistants, who is a human being, showing extraordinary compassion during extraordinary times, and it is these people that we should cherish as we look to the future and come out of this pandemic. We as a society should put down arms, weapons and truly fund healthcare, not war, fund proper healthcare systems that can be used within the future, perhaps even we can learn from our past, and build a better future, one where the front line doctors, nurses and care assistants, get the pay that they truly deserve.

Kia, yesterday put a tweet out asking opinions, on something to do with perhaps starting a business, in the future, of doing printed memory, cushions, something that, in my opinion she should do..... An intelligent mind, that of an angel and a friendship that was truly shining through with Ken Benbow

I shall link the article below, about this amazing young lady,

https://www.lep.co.uk/news/lancashire-d-day-veteran-ken-benbow-overcome-emotion-he-receives-touching-gift-remember-beautiful-caring-wife-ada-2544694

Along with the incredibly touching interview that she gave, to Good Morning Britain. If there is anyone who deserves recognition for this, then it is definitely young care assistants such as Kia Tobin.... And a society change in which people do not pre-judge others, regardless of age.

At 17, she is a true angel and an inspiration to others around the country. Someone worthy of recognition and perhaps it is now time to recognise these amazing young people, without the media painting a negative picture of them.

Lockdown Music Review: Mary Chapin Carpenter

Monday, April 20, 2020

Sometimes the best medicine in the world is not something that is "pharmaceutical" but is more natural. Yes we might be having strange dreams, suffering from insomnia and worrying, a good way to stop worrying is to avoid the news, and do what you love to do anyway, re-discover that old hobby, talk to friends, make time to complete that project, it really does go without saying.

But one of the best medicines available within the world at the moment, is the medicine of Music, something that is a fantastic communication method as well as a language that is perhaps more universal than Esperanto was thought to be. It goes without saying that Music itself has healing properties, it can also relax and ease our minds of worry and provides escapism from the world. Just listening to Albatross by Fleetwood Mac, has the properties to relax us and calm us. Okay they might have been slightly high when the recorded the track, but it is purely instrumental and simple within the style that it has been recorded. Whenever I listen to it, I am transferred in thought to a more peaceful place away from worry, away from the fractured world and society that we live in, to a place of peace and tranquillity, to a place where sandy beaches and the shore gently laps with waves. And it remains even today one of the most unique pieces of music ever recorded.

That is what is great about music, it is also a work of art and an art form within its own rights. Despite Albatross taking my mind to a place of Escapism, an Albatross is quite a large sea bird, and from a shoreline with lapping waves, it also makes you think that you are flying, again flight is escapism, and looking down on the world as we soar above it, is an ideal that a lot of us at the moment probably wish we could be doing. Ah, how we can continue to dream on.

I for quite a while now, have become quite accustomed to listening to an Artist, from America, called "Mary Chapin Carpenter" And I have a guess that a lot of readers of this blog, have possibly never heard of Mary Chapin Carpenter, I for one had not heard of her, until I stumbled across a track by her, called "What does it mean to travel" and since then I have kind of become hooked on her unique musical style and voice. Whilst she hails from America, her music has a mixture, no a multitude of different styles, which all come together to make something different, something that is escapism and best of all pure sounding.

Now whilst the American singer and songwriter world gave us the likes of James Taylor, who broke through to international recognition, Mary Chapin Carpenter, remained silent, definitely within Europe to some degree. Only recently have people within Europe discovered her music, much like me.

With a New Jersey background her style of music is one that borders both Americana and Folk, plus Singer Songwriter, all into one whole swoop and places it nicely under an umbrella, it really is perhaps one of the nicest sounds that I have come across in a long time. The track that originally got me into her music, is the song "What does it mean to travel" which I shall post, for you to listen to.

Stunning, Haunting almost isn't it? And it is one with questions, questions about being alone, but taking the time to explore and seek out new places. Something that a lot of people will be keen to do, when Lockdown is ended.

The way the track is produced is simple, a guitar and some light drum patterns make it mellow and ideal for relaxation, ideal for long summer days and light nights. Yes it really is music to pass the time with during Lockdown.

Having listened to her music for quite some time, it is perfect and a blend of styles and instrumental patterns develop to shape the songs, songs that reflect the personal life and somewhat turbulent life that Mary Chapin Carpenter, has lived through, including her battles with depression. Something that a lot of musicians are sadly not capable of doing due to the media hounding them, something that the media even today carry on doing.

Just remember the hashtag #BeKind, something that was long forgotten after the sad death of Caroline Flack.

Reserved, is Mary Chapin Carpenter, with the way she sings, but she also wants us the listener to experience what she has experienced, a strange way of looking at things, but reviewing music can be a strange thing to do as well.

"Sometimes Just The Sky" was the first album of hers that I listened to, and whilst it is the most recent album, it flows, it flows with aspects of self help, self isolation, and personal experiences that can help us in the long run become better throughout life.

All of her discography echoes self help and how to be better at all parts of life that we are in, and no matter what part of life we are in, her singing just helps with that. A unique self help book, in song form, being communicated through song instead of by pure reading that we would normally do. Relationships, Travel, Social Isolation (before it became a coined phrase) along with physical distancing, all of the songs on each of her albums deal with life, including some of life's questions that are answered in a unique song form.

But amazingly, the songs about relationships involve songs about break-ups and love, all be it sung with a unique style, but the songs about love are sung within a platonic way, something that these days, should be discussed. Platonic relationships are something that we should all have, and are the best kinds of relationships no matter what.

A piece of Carol King, also shines through, so if you like Carol King, Bruce Springsteen and James Taylor, I dare say as well, but Leonard Cohen, then you are in for a treat with Mary Chapin Carpenter, add her to your music collection, you really will not be disappointed.

But it is this style of music that I really do like, the obscure, and yes I do like a whole plethora of music, but Chapin Carpenter, really is a diamond gleaming and is a pleasure to listen to.

And within these strange times, we really need music like this to listen to, music for pure relaxation and music that is ideal for anyone working from home, who wants to switch off, and get work done.

I must also point out, that Mary Chapin Carpenter, has a fantastic YouTube Channel where she has been uploading music to, guitar sessions, and this is fantastic, so give her a listen to, for escapism and transporting to somewhere that holds good memories, positive energies surely is the best place to be, and the style of her music helps to take us there.

Please, Please do give her a listen.....

A voice of calm, a voice that can teach us all something about life, our own life and others in life, a voice of peace and harmony.

A full 10/10 and a musician and artist who is yet to become, more discovered over here in the UK.

Things that are NOT cancelled

Sunday, April 19, 2020

I want to share a little something. A friend of mine, sent me the following, which is a list of things that are not cancelled, which we should all be looking at, the best things in life are free and these are some of the best free things that you have with you at the moment.

So Let's embrace what we have.

An Island Wide Appeal, The chance to Help in a Poetry Project.

Now as you are aware, the fiveislandseye is a completely new and re-vamped blog site, which is run in conjunction with Thescillyindependent, a website that went live, last week. Thescillyindependent is a news website, and at the moment it is still to some extent under construction, so please do be patient in regards to that.

Still though it has been built using WordPress, a Content Management System or CMS for short, which is a fantastic way in which to design and build a website, the best thing as well is it does not require any code at all, everything is modular and it can work within a lot of use cases, from hospitality, technology, e-commerce and more, so if anyone is looking into adapting their businesses in these strange times, then WordPress is fantastic. Another slightly easier CMS to use is Wix, and that works in the same way as any desktop publishing software does, although it is slightly more expensive, but it is largely drag and drop, again making it super easy to get online, in these extraordinary times.

Anyway, I shall not waffle on, digression though, regardless of is quite good and something else that I have found to be of use, is ignoring the news..... Unless of course it is in a local newspaper or on a local news website.

Thescillyindependent earlier, had a comment, on an article, from a poet, called David Redfield. He has previously been interviewed by Linda, on Radio Scilly (Now Islands FM). And he is asking if anyone on the Islands would be interested in helping with his latest project, two of which he is running at the moment, one for where he lives in North Norfolk and the other being for The Isles of Scilly.

The project that David, is working on is called "The Lockdown Spring Renga Project". Which is a writing project to reflect life under Lockdown, one of which as mentioned above is for where David lives. However, David has also said that his other project is "The Scilly Renga".

David also adds, that he is posting "The Scilly Renga" on "Johnny Mack's Jukebox Page" and on the Isles of Scilly Notice Board page as well as the St Mary's Library Page. If anyone can help or wants to be part of and help with his project and The Scilly Renga, then the link to David's page is below.

A Warm Welcome to fiveislandseye

Saturday, April 18, 2020

Hello, Ah, Hello world and of course Hello from The Isles Of Scilly. Previously this website... nah blog, was known as Thescillyindependent.... Yes that was once this blog, but that has all changed, instead Thescillyindependent is now here. Instead this site has been renamed.... But why? Well because it would be pointless to waste good blog space, that is the simplest of reasons. Instead a rename to the following,

fiveislandseye

did seem the logical and most sensible thing to do, but why fiveislandseye? Well the Isles of Scilly has five inhabited islands within it's archipelago, and because as fiveislandseye is now re branded slightly, ever so slightly it is now the perfect time to change this existing corner of blog space into a blog of positives in what is otherwise a negative time. it is also a sad time for the world, but despite the sadness within the world, the thing that gets people through the bad times, is laughter which always wins, that and music, entertainment and much more. For these extraordinary times are leading to entire communities doing things to raise morale and spirits, something that is good for mental health and our overall sanity.

fiveislandseye is a new blog, for The Isles Of Scilly, and is community based, a communal blog of positives and content, but at the same time, it is one that you can get involved in, want to contribute, with an article or content for the fiveislandseye YouTube channel, then do get in contact!!!!

Another thing, fiveislandseye, is for visitors who love these islands and keep coming back, year on year and for the relatives of islanders who are around the UK and further afield......

But please, for now, Stay Home and Stay Safe!!!!
